Gretta Sarfaty | Revelations

Revelations ǀ Gretta Sarfaty performance and exhibition curator Tálisson Melo Next September 24th, Marli Matsumoto Arte Contemporânea, in partnership with Central Galeria, will present Revelations, by Gretta Sarfaty, performance and exhibition, curated by Tálisson Melo The artist will re-enact the performance A Maga, created in 1978, and show the series of photographs Kabbalah, from 1984 and 1985, which will be on display for a few days, during the week from September 24 to October 1. In 1978, Gretta Sarfaty participated in the collective happening Mitos Vadios, orchestrated by Ivald Granato. About twenty artists participated with ephemeral proposals for performance and installation - such as Hélio Oiticica, Anna Maria Maiolino, Regina Vater, Lygia Pape, José Roberto Aguilar, and Marta Minujín. Gretta, fully dressed in white, incarnated a character, The Maga, as she wandered around the Rua Augusta parking lot approaching people for individual conversations, readings of their hands and aura, or brief meditations in a cloth tent. This was the artist's first public performance, and she continued her mystical search for identity-otherness interaction. Later, between 1984 and '85, living in New York City, Gretta began attending Kabbalah lessons at Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, and the feasts of the local Jewish community. Having been one of the first women to have access to Kabbalah classes, she carried her camera and made a series of records of the interactions between people in an acute and subtle observation of the social dynamics that surrounded her.
