Armando Andrade Tudela’s (Lima, Peru 1975) artistic practice explores the planes that intersect between popular culture, politics and Fine Arts. Even though he frequently uses the historical and cultural context of Latin America as a starting point, on a deeper level, Andrade Tudela’s work focuses on complex translation and transfer systems: How do we politically or socially assimilate aesthetic ideas in the local stratum? And in a more general sense, how are the ideas themselves embedded within the fabric of geography and physical topography
Andrade Tudela moves freely between a wide spectrum of media and materials, such as photography and video, sculpture, drawing, installation, while also regularly incorporating handicraft and design elements in his work. In his exhaustive and research-guided projects, he often employs almost documentary techniques, such as recorded interviews and photographic explorations, combining them with multiple references to history, politics and popular culture. At the same time, his drawings and objects combine visual openness and technical achievements with conceptual complexity.
This characteristic accumulation of layers of meaning and references in Andrade Tudela’s work is not kneaded and solidified in sharp historical interpretations or comments. On the contrary, because it focuses on temporally and geographically delayed places, Andrade Tudela dissects internal rhythms and subtle discordant concealments within cultural history and thus, ultimately, undermines and even dismantles the structure of the historical and cultural framework that he examines his work.
His work is part of the following collections: Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Cisneros collection in New York, the Guggenheim Museum in Nueva York, the Museu d’Art Contemporani (MACBA) in Barcelona, the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI), the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Museum fur Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Tate in London, among others.
