The failure of the referendum on the peace agreements in Colombia constitutes one of the most significant turning points in the country’s recent social and political history. Its reverberations were felt in the social uprisings of 2019 and 2021, in a context exacerbated by the difficult circumstances the world faced during a paralyzing pandemic. At the deepest level of the forces rising out of exhaustion and discontent lies the erosion of national fictions, which maneuver between the local, the global, and even the extraterrestrial.
A falling lead flag (Machina Anemica), fluttering and suspended by a nonexistent current of wind, is a symptom of the failure of war. It offers a bleak commentary on the mechanisms that can lead to catastrophe and on the fracturing of the minimum agreements that are supposedly meant to underpin sustainable national projects. This contradiction becomes evident in the physical impossibility of a metal as heavy, toxic, and harmful as it is malleable unfurling in waves of rippling plates. The very material neutralizes the meaning of flags and calls into question the identity-defining significance of national symbols. The gesture of its spearhead pointing toward the ground connects with a global movement that challenges the vertical structures upon which the world we inhabit has been built.
Ultimately, the work draws attention to the dismantling of the dynamics through which each state has sought to promise equitable development for those who take refuge in their national identity. Regardless of the flag’s colors, its symbolic treatment offers no universal embrace capable of silencing the voices demanding justice, peace, equity, and sustainability. The substitution of its materiality and the alteration of its morphology offer a static and indivisible perspective on the social and political processes the world has witnessed, processes that seek to establish hegemony by subjugating anyone who attempts to assert themselves as an essential member of the state.
The power of fantasy intensifies as the fallen monument confronts a series of compositions that explore the icon’s plasticity and reproducibility. Through cutting-and-pasting techniques that correspond to the dissection of a declining symbol or an inert body, the collages challenge the spatial and temporal boundaries of the installed sculpture. The movement of the image, which suggests spills, collisions, collapses, and other forms of disruption, can be understood as an invitation to participate in the possibility of constructing new points of reference that exceed the boundaries of the established order, with the aim of bringing attention to demands that can no longer be ignored.
