In his 2009 and 2010 retrospectives, which toured several international museums, Urs Lüthi consolidated his position as one of the most distinctive representatives of international art. In SPACES, fullcolor, largeformat photographs present a chronology of the artist’s treatment of space, complementing the outofprint publication Art is the better life. Viewers are wordlessly conducted through the rooms, installations and environs of Lüthi’s most important international exhibitions since 2009. When the artist situates a work in a room, he does not simply change it; he incorporates it temporarily into the work itself. This applies not only to large and extensive presentations but also to the carefully deliberated placement of a small work. Lüthi occupies and appropriates the spaces of his works in a fashion that overcomes the selfreferential threshold between the viewer and the artist, who often figures as the subject matter of his own works.
The exhibition and book SPACES were on view in 2011 at the Centre culturel suisse in Paris and 2012 im Brandts Museet for Fotokunst, Odense.
