“On the first body, or the instrument of the soul.
It seems that talking about the soul has fallen out of favor. It is the body that reveals itself; it is the body that is the object of all care, attention, and zeal. And if we concern ourselves with the soul, we do so in relation to the body, to ensure its health, its well-being, and its obedience to our will. For what seems most important is the living body, not the corpse, which can also be cremated so as not to take up any more space in this already overcrowded world. The dead body, moreover, is always someone else’s body: what interests us, on the other hand, is our own body. I would even go so far as to say that this word does not admit of the plural: what interests me is my body, and I like it all the more when it makes itself felt as little as possible as something autonomous and separate from me—when it is, above all, the instrument at my disposal without obstacles or resistance. What is health if not this very dominion over the body? And I’m not just talking about actual illnesses: but also about those discomforts that lead me to eat excessively or to fast, to sleep too much or to lie awake, or to be consumed by sexual desire or to shun it, to race dizzyingly through streets and countries or to remain locked up at home with the blinds drawn, making everyone believe I’m out. And I’m limiting myself to the simplest and most common discomforts, which seem to arise from the body’s resistance to my control over it.”
